Introduction

As the US society prepares to come out of the heavy initial Shelter in Place restrictions, I have had many ideas and thoughts around how this may happen. I decided to put them on paper and share in case it helps others think through the next steps. I feel this is a critical step to getting businesses moving again. The ‘re-opening’ is coming soon, start your planning now so you are ready.

Disclaimer and terms:

These are just my guesses based on what I am reading and thinking about. Don’t take anything in here too seriously, I may be completely wrong. Please don’t be mad with anything I’ve included, there may be some politically incorrect items or societal generalizations. These are in no way endorsed by my employer (or anyone outside of my head).

While much of this thinking can be utilized anywhere, some of my thoughts and timelines are more tuned to California as that is where I live.

Defining some terms:

SIP - shelter in place - I am using this as a general term for the lockdowns, stay home orders and guidelines related to Covid, whether they are governmental or private restrictions, enforced or not.

Short term - 1 to 3 months after SIP is lifted

Mid term - 3-6 months after SIP is lifted

Timeline (as of 4/18): I know the government won’t post timelines, so I’ll share my guesses.

Phase 1 - (2 weeks out, May 4th) we’ll see lightening of the restrictions at least some baby steps mainly in the items closest to ‘essential’ functions;

Generally - people will still be staying home, but going out more for essentials

Re-opening parks (this is starting to happen now)

Hospitals expanding back to their normal services (i.e. non-emergency surgeries)

Phase 2 - (4 weeks out, May 18th) The next level of reduced restrictions will bring back the ‘non-essential’ but important commerce.

Generally - people will be working more, have more freedom to go out, but will still be at home a lot

Construction work will ramp back up

Retailers will open back up, at least to have people on site to do work, fulfill orders, support online, and potentially curbside. Customers may not be allowed to enter the business, if they are allowed many limits and spacing restrictions will be in place.

Large companies will be allowed to have more staff on site, but still limited and low numbers (currently these companies have only the critical staff to keep the lights on)

Phase 3 - (6 weeks out, June 1st) - continued reduction of restrictions and society will be allowed to have small gatherings (bbq’s, visit family and friends)

Generally - this will start to feel more normal for people, lots more people workI get and out and about for work, businesses will be open, weekend activities will start to ramp back up including short vacation trips locally

Random Thoughts:

What sort of guidelines should we expect:

The state government will provide guidelines at a high level, the counties may have their own customizations of that.

Follow social distancing guidelines, these may adjust over time, potentially to be less restrictive or more restrictive (see Swarms section below).

Large companies will have their own guidelines. You may notice national chains being slower to open up their policies until many states are in sync. I noticed large chains rolled out their policies nationwide when SIP started, so am expecting similar on the ‘open up’ end. Note: this may give an advantage to the smaller local companies to be quicker and more adaptive to current guidelines. (As an example, Chik-fil-a closed all lobbies of their restaurants even in areas not under SIP, so it will be hard for them to say we are re-opening our lobbies in California but not Nevada.)

Leverage learnings from other industries

Social distancing practices; spit shields, masks, curbside, tape on floor, indoor traffic patterns, waiting outside, indoor capacity limits, leverage new traffic patterns (i.e. leverage the back door)

Online Ordering - those companies with good online tools were able to quickly shift their business from brick and mortar to online/mobile. I imagine this will continue to be a much larger part of business (especially brick and mortar businesses) than pre-Covid. As a business owner, if you haven’t invested in this area, you should, or at least have a thought out strategy for what you are doing or what you aren’t doing and why.

Curbside (Drive Up) - society seems to be liking curbside pickup. When done right, it is a great alternative to waiting 1 day for Amazon Prime to deliver (or 7+ days for Prime during SIP, P.S. if Amazon reads this I’d like a partial refund of the annual membership I pay for Prime as they are not fulfilling on my expectations to receive items overnight, half-way kidding)

Now that consumers have found curbside to be easy, in the future they may not want to walk through your store to find the 1 or 2 items they need, they’ll want you to do that and just stop by to pick up the item.

Businesses need to develop good process around this. This can go really bad and drive a lot of consumer frustration if not done right.

Businesses will also need to find efficiencies for solving this. It may need to be a loss leader (i.e. not very profitable) as this takes a lot of staff expense to support.

Some businesses have supported this during SIP with very low volumes, but after SIP I could envision the volumes increase 10x. Is your process going to be able to keep up with that?

Even if you don’t have a great online/mobile app, you can create ways to support this:

Text us - leverage one of the many text services to be your inflow of customer orders

Google form - throw up a quick form on your website with a datasheet of all the orders coming in

Fake it till you make it - even letting customers call in, write down their order on paper (create a ticket), then prepare the order, call the customer back to say “it’s ready”, have them pickup.

Re-opening in society will be slow, and gradually adjust over next 9 months.

Group Activities -

Social gatherings will be limited to a low number

Limited community events through summer

Large community events (greater than 500 people) will be very rare until 2021

Health and Fitness

Traditional gyms will remain closed through end of 2020. They will continue to leverage video/remote training and find alternate sites (i.e. park) to enable social distancing

Close Contact Industries

Dentists, barber/hair stylists, nail salons, doctor offices, chiropractors

Will consumers want people working close to them?

Maybe, but maybe at a lower rate and not visit as often

Will guidance for these industries be different than others like retail.

Children

School won’t start up again until Aug/Sept, this will mean kids will have been at home for 5 or 6 months.

Parents will be looking for ways to get their kids out of the house (safely) and ways to keep them occupied while at home (due to limited group activities. Are their products you can develop or target towards this audience?

Workers

White Collar Work - corporate workers will continue to stay home (this may also push down into the mid-size and small companies, at least for the short and mid-term)

Large companies have built up their remote work practices, and many jobs can now be done from home (previously wasn’t accepted, i.e. phone banks, operations agents).

Large companies may not want to risk swarms within their workforce, so will implement their own policies for going back to the office.

Very likely there will be alternating days to space employees out (i.e. Jimmy is in office Mon, Wed, Bobby is in office Tues, Thurs, everyone is remote Friday)

This may have a huge impact on the SF Bay Area as they have a high number of technology companies. Will software developers want to sit on the crowded corporate bus from SF to Palo Alto?

Blue Collar Work - service related industries will ramp up pretty quickly and workers will go back to much more normal work than White Collar. They will have changes based on social distancing, but much of this work requires the employee to be on site.

Travel

Air travel will be limited, both personal travel and business travel over the mid-term and probably through 2020. I don’t imagine myself getting on a plane to go visit any of my vendors to see their latest small change to their product (ship me a sample), unless it is very high priority. Same goes for meetings, I’ll only fly if it’s very high priority.

Local travel may increase as people aren’t going on the big trips, they may take shorter more local trips. (side note; many people have not used any vacation time for start of the year, so will be concentrating more vacation in summer or later in year)

E-commerce - things have been somewhat up and down in this space during SIP, low inventory, long shipping delays, new users

Some people tried online ordering for the first time, they may now be more interested in using your online services

Some people were frustrated with e-commerce during SIP, they may be more in favor of purchasing from brick and mortar

Some people will have a stronger sense of community, and local community specifically, driving them to purchase local and from small businesses.

Elderly and pre-existing conditions - folks in these groups may be forced to follow additional extensions to keep social distancing. This is largely on honor code (or up to the individual), so some of these people may be heavily affected and others may ignore the guidelines.

Swarms - Be prepared for future lockdowns, may see local level increases and forced SIP

If testing increases, we’ll get a better data driven approach to SIP. If the data shows increasing numbers in a city or county, the local area may go into SIP.

Closing schools will happen really quickly (what downstream impacts does this have?).

SIP may be on a gradual scale in the future. For example there may be something like a high/med/low scale, and this may adjust weekly (think about Smokey the bear and fire danger). My gut says governments won’t change this quickly, but we should be prepared for monthly changes in SIP guidelines.

Businesses will need to be ready to shift quickly if the guidelines change. Be ready with your backup plans for how to shift to online ordering, curbside, etc. if the lobby/inside of your business is closed.

Think differently - business owners need to be more strategic and challenge their current knowledge and how things used to be done.

Customer/consumer views will be different in the short term (from Day 1 through 3 months) and will gradually get back to normal over multiple months. No one really knows what this ‘new normal’ will be like and may be very different for all people.

Look for new revenue opportunities - the ways you used to market and make money may no longer work (at least in short/mid-term)

For those of you who aren't aware, there are lots of modifications you can make to any PowerWheels ride on toy. Check out this online community dedicated to modifying them. ModifiedPowerWheels

This post gives an overview of my modification of a PowerWheels Arctic Cat. My son was constantly filling the bed of his Arctic Cat with rocks, dirt or whatever he could find. I figured he would like it if this bed would dump. I checked out ModifiedPowerWheels for some examples of this modification and didn't find anything (here is a link to my forum post). So, here is how I did it.

Starting Look

Step 1: I first started by taking off the existing bed, there must have been 16 screws. Which turned out to be one of the major obstacles. The dump bed actually holds most of the rear of the Arctic Cat together including roll bar fenders, and top of seats. The bed normally integrates right into the seats which cannot occur if the bed is made to dump.

Step 2: I needed to shift the bed back about 2 inches to gain the clearance needed from the seats.

Step 3: Add supports for the seats and roll bar. The roll bar was totally held in by the dump bed, so I decided to attach it to the seats. For the seat and roll bar, I used some scrap angle iron I had around. I welded ends onto the angle iron in order to give me a way to attach the support to the roll bar.

Step 4: Add supports for the fenders. I created some custom L brackets to fit the fenders and give spacing for the dump bed (you could also use off the shelf L brackets, but the lengths needed are a little odd).

Step 5: Add hinges to dump bed. I used 2 L brackets with holes in them to create the hinges. I mounted them to the back of the Arctic Cat frame, and on the bottom of the dump bed.

Step 6: I created a cover to hide the motors and inner parts which are exposed when the dump bed is in action. I used some flexible material I had around.

All done. Except my son asked how it dumps. He wants it to work on a switch. So, now I'm looking for some type of motor to use.

Here is what rain will do to a poorly designed track. All the dips are full of water and very poor drainage. In one month from previous photos, you can also see how many weeds have grown in the track area. Riding line doesn't really have weeds as it is very packed down.

This is my attempt to start the correction of the bowl. It has never worked correctly and needs some work. I pulled in the top edge of the bowl about 2 feet and it appears to have helped but I need another roller or two after it to gain speed into Berm #2.

Due to the bowl not working out too well, I cut a line that comes off of berm #3 and bypasses the bowl. It is showing promise to allow the rider to complete the circuit.

This picture shows the end of berm #1, and the split between the original loop and the newly added bypass to berm #3. At the end of berm #1 we cut out the end of the berm and added a roller. I was constantly cutting this roller in order for it to flow well and to create more speed into berm #3.Darren Goetzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18325713303014252638noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9011956372775222190.post-4025655169662437482013-01-05T10:37:00.000-08:002013-01-20T09:11:47.266-08:00Pump Track - August 11, 2012

This is the day that we made the most progress. Another friend of mine showed up and he has a lot of experience with building jumps and such. We added berm #3, which is built off of an offshoot from berm #1. This opened up a secondary line. After berm #3 there is a roller that goes into what we call the bowl. The bowl seemed cool, but didn't allow the rider to keep enough speed to get to berm #2.

This is the week where we made our biggest gains on the track. A friend of mine and I went and rode a couple of other pump tracks to see if we could identify why our track wasn't feeling right. What we concluded was that rollers 1-3 didn't flow because they flattened out in between. You can see from some of the side views that we dug out the flat ground which made the rollers flow from one to another.

We also added rollers 4 and 5 after berm 1. At this point, we were attempting to create a small loop track just to get a ride able circuit.

P.S. this was also the weekend I bought a new Fit bike.

After riding the 3 rollers and berm, we figured out the berm was a little too tight. I pulled the edges of the berm out with the backhoe loader to open it up a bit.

After riding the 3 original rollers (known as rollers 1, 2, 3) and the berm, we figured out the shape of the rollers needed some work. This weekend was spent giving the rollers more flow. We also removed roller 1 completely and rebuilt it due to the original roller having a lot of broken down cement in it.

These are the earliest pictures I took of the start of the pump track. You can see 3 existing rollers, I built these about a year earlier for my son to use with his PowerWheel 4 wheeler. I used the 3 rollers as the start to my track and added a berm first. I wasn't sure how to build the berm so just went for it.

I'm posting a series of blog posts about the building of my pump track. I'm posting these after the fact so the details of my memory of each step are mainly recounted through the pictures I took at the time. The build started on June 2, 2012 and I had a full line completed on September 9th.

This was my first attempt at building any type of bike track, so there were a lot of missteps and corrections made along the way.

Feel free to post a comment or question if you have any for me. Thanks for checking it out.Darren Goetzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18325713303014252638noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9011956372775222190.post-76718377782668016352011-01-31T07:03:00.000-08:002011-01-31T07:14:35.930-08:00Are you a member of "My Starbucks Rewards" program? You should be!I have been a member of Starbucks' "My Starbucks Rewards" program for about a year now. Every time I mention the loyalty program to people, all I get is a blank stare.

I'm a huge fan of Starbuck's loyalty program. It's simple and they reward me very well for my patronage to their stores.

The piece that still boggles my mind is that it doesn't seem like Starbucks promotes the program very well and that not too many people are part of the program.

First...every time I tell someone about it they've never heard about it.

Second...when was the last time you saw a sign at a register telling you about it (for me I can't remember seeing it since they removed the annual fee).

Third...I've never heard a Baristas ask someone if they're interested in joining.

Fourth...no Barista has ever mentioned to me how many points I have or thanking me for being a part of their "My Starbucks Rewards" program.

I'm very curious to know Starbuck's strategy for their loyalty program. They have such a loyal customer base that I'm thinking they haven't had to offer or market such a program heavily. I guess it's a good thing they haven't had to. I feel the programs like this aren't focused on highly enough during the 'Easy' times, and it's during the tough times that loyalty programs really pay off.

Is your company investing in a loyalty program? Would your company benefit from knowing who your most loyal customers are and incenting them to remain loyal?

Please leave comments with your thoughts.

P.S. Every time I tell someone about it (as I often rave about it as the best loyalty program I'm a member of), I try to get them to participate and I know that I have gotten at least a handful of people to signup.
Darren Goetzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11994482071399640332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9011956372775222190.post-88037472858312806762011-01-29T14:44:00.000-08:002011-01-29T14:44:19.675-08:00What is the business driver behind Starbucks' logo change?

Recently there have been multiple occurrences of people mentioning the Starbucks logo change to me.

First...was my wife who mentioned in to me. Usually when she mentions something marketing related it must have hit some mainstream channel for her to be aware and comment on it to me.

Second...was a blog post about this change (can't remember which blog, or I would give them credit). From this blog I clicked over to watch the Schultz video discussing why Starbucks felt it was time to update the logo (see here).

After watching the video by Howard Schultz, I was again reminded about my struggles with Corporate Brand teams who have the tough job of aligning the Brand with the look and feel of designs. I think branding is very important but am confused by how the change of the Starbucks logo has much positive impact on the Starbucks business.

To me...it seems like Starbucks may have felt they needed to change something and removing the name from their logo would move them forward into a new league.

Like many other companies who have updated their logos recently, it looks to me like Starbucks has received a lot of negative feedback about this change. I'm thinking most people, me included, feel that there isn't really a need for this change, there are very few people who want to see changes with the brands they love.

Am I missing something? Is there an obvious up side to this change that I am missing?Darren Goetzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11994482071399640332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9011956372775222190.post-39943651125269548822011-01-28T08:14:00.000-08:002011-01-31T07:10:37.651-08:00Big things are happening at StarbucksI have been thinking about writing about Starbuck's "My Starbucks Rewards" program for a long time but never got around to writing it...now is the time. Last week the stylist used the CRM tool again to better profile me and understand my hair.

She used the knowledge of when my last haircut was, to:
- get a feel for how short to cut the top, based on previous razor number an time since last haircut,
- to know if my receipt coupon would still be valid (more on this in a separate post)

This stylist was using Great Clips' CRM tool to her advantage and to help me, the customer. I want to thank Great Clips for providing this tool to make it easy for their stylists to know my preferences.

Darren Goetzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11994482071399640332noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9011956372775222190.post-64974455617959082002010-10-02T06:19:00.000-07:002010-10-02T06:19:38.013-07:00Goetz Everything Annual Report - Top Level Summary of my first year of bloggingSo, it's been just over 1 year since I started this blog on a whim on September 19th, 2009. I started my blog really just to see where it would take me, and it has been a roller coaster of a journey. I've never been much of a writer, so I knew that would be a challenge. This post will give a short high level summary of the past year of my blogging and some thoughts of where I may take it. I will also follow with a couple of follow up posts using a similar headline starting with "Goetz Everything Annual Report" where I dive deeper into this topic including Traffic Stats, Top Posts, My Traffic Strategy, The Future of Goetz Everything and more.

Over the past 1 year and almost 2 weeks, I posted 36 times. The highest month of posts was October of last year where I posted 10 times, the next highest posting volume was 6 which I did in Sept 09, Nov 09 and Sept 10. I even had a four months where I couldn't even get 1 post out. In September 2010, I tried to set a posting goal of posting Monday, Wednesday and Friday, which helped but proved to be way too lofty.

My drive to write would go up and down. Somedays, I felt like I could write a handful of posts. I would usually stop at 2 or 3, and other days I wouldn't even want to write a single word.

It has been a fun experience and I think I'm starting to straighten things out in my head with where I want to take this blog and will probably tighten up the content to be more focused. Hopefully I can create a strategy that allows me to continue to blog and hopefully drive more value to those reading.
While I was recently flying from Las Vegas (LAS) to San Jose (SJC) and was snacking on the peanuts. Somewhat bored, I began exploring the peanut packaging. I came across the ingredients line:

Now, I would think that common sense would explain that a bag of peanuts were probably processed in a 'facility that processes peanuts...'

She came across a couple of random pictures that she was confused as to why I would have taken a picture of that. After I explained each to her, I had her cracking up. So here is the first of a couple random posts about random things I've come across recently in my travels.

Backstory: During my first trip ever to Charlotte, NC, I'm walking through a not so great part of town with a co-worker. We're on our way to meet other co-workers for some BBQ. After getting off the light rail train (which was super easy and convenient, highly recommend Charlotte Lynx Light Rail) we were walking towards a McDonald's when I glanced up at the customizaable 'old-skool' sign.

Highlight: It read "50 NUGGETS WITH TEA (GAL) $10.99. I thought WOW, that's a lot of TEA, and WOW that's a lot of NUGGETS. Awesome deal, I wish we had that back when I was in college, we would have eaten that deal up.

Deep Thought: Is a deal like this created at the local level? I don't believe I can get out of a California McDonald's with a regular size meal and drink for much less than $10.99. This meal could feed a family of 5. I was lucky that I had dinner plans with the rest of my team, or these 50 NUGGETS AND GAL OF TEA would have been my match for the night.

Check this out

Recently, while commuting home from work, I came across a motorcycle with a passenger that was reading. I thought to myself, you can't read while riding on the back of an open air motorcycle. Oh, I guess you can with an Amazon Kindle or other similar e-book reader.

I wonder if any of the Product Managers for these e-book readers are targeting marketing to motorcycle riders or passengers. I'm sure it's not an easy market to capture, but here is the situation I envision based on the photo to the right:

The husband wants to take a bike ride down the coast of beautiful California. The wife would rather sit in a nice beach front villa reading a nice book. The husband coaxes her into taking the bike ride by surprising her with a shiny new iPad (or Sony Reader, etc.). Now he has his ride, she has her new reading toy.

What do you think? Is this a feasible marketing angle for e-book product marketers?Darren Goetzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18325713303014252638noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9011956372775222190.post-37335761240282223622010-09-10T02:23:00.000-07:002010-09-10T02:23:00.487-07:00Is this good or bad product management? Kiwi Express Shine

So, I went on a simple errand the other day to replace my Kiwi Express Shine Sponge mobile shoe polishing tool. Luckily (you'll see why I was lucky if you keep reading), the original product that I was replacing was a hand-me-down left in my office desk by the previous occupant.

So, to start, this is a great product, I love the convenience of it. Since I never remember to polish my shoes the old fashion way with polish, applicator, brush, etc. at home, this simple product is a must have for me now.

I head over to the local Walgreen's to simply pick up the exact product I had previously. I find the item and right next to it is a similar, same brand, but slightly different product - Kiwi Express No Buff Cream Polish. As a conscious consumer, I look at the differences between the two products.

From a feature perspective, they look pretty much the same...they are different sizes...the applicator surface is a different shape...they are the same price...So, I guess I'll go with the one I know worked for me previously.

Wait a minute, let me look at them side-by-side in my hand. Hold on, these things weigh totally different amounts. I check the listed ounces. 1 is 2oz, the other is 1.7oz. For the same price?

Now, I hope these two Kiwi products have some sort of difference, because the volume difference is so great. From a Product Management perspective, they did not help me understand the reason why they were the same price with such a volume difference. Even looking at their website, I still don't get any details that would make me believe the products have different features.

Is this vagueness good product management? i.e. hope customers purchase the lower volume due to the large profit margin.

Or, are the products priced accordingly and have very different features which are not explained to the customer?

What are your thoughts? check out the Kiwi website and see if you can tell the difference.Darren Goetzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18325713303014252638noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9011956372775222190.post-80467363960823201862010-09-08T06:51:00.000-07:002010-09-08T06:51:21.725-07:00Apple wasted 100's of hours of my time and now I increased my productivity by two times - iPod 2X featureMy commute is 2+ hours each way (yeah, it's not as bad as it sounds, I'll share more on this in the future), so it's important for me to use this time as productively as possible.

During the driving portion (1 hour 15 minutes) of my commute, I usually listen to podcasts. The other day I accidentally clicked on the iPod button that said 1x. I had no idea what that button did, I didn't even know it was a button. And what do you know, the audio spead up to a perfect speed for me to still understand the content while getting through it in 1/2 the time (I assume that is actual speed 2 times as fast).

Now I can get through podcasts in 1/2 the time which is great for me.

The amazing thing to me is that I have been an avid iPod/iPhone user for years and listen to a ton of podcasts and never knew this feature existed. I have wasted 100's of hours over the past years listening to people in normal speed. Even though Apple makes great products, they still miss the mark on making feature intuitive or figuring ways to highlight lesser used features.

Am I on my own on this? Have you used this feature?Darren Goetzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18325713303014252638noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9011956372775222190.post-513572184539844202010-09-01T19:22:00.000-07:002010-09-01T19:22:13.923-07:00Surprised by Great Clips' simple CRM implementationWhy was I surprised when "the best value in haircuts", Great Clips, provided great Customer Service?

Because it is so rare to see a retailer using a CRM system to store my preferences. Great Clips showed that they have a CRM system that identified me by my phone number, used my first name and the stylist knew that I wanted a 2 guard used on the sides of my head.

I've been going to a local small salon for the past 10 haircuts, and the stylist who has cut my hair each time, looks at me like he has never seen me before. I've discussed the same things with him each time. Why can't he jot down some notes each time and provide me with a WOW service the next time by knowing something about me?

Sounds simple, but why can't I think of any brick and mortar retailers that know my preferences? Hats off to Great Clips for taking the time to get to know me.

Do you have any examples of brick and mortar retailers knowing your preferences? Please leave a comment if you have.Darren Goetzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18325713303014252638noreply@blogger.com2
